Renters Insurance

Have you ever thought about how much all of your personal property is worth? Would you be able to replace everything if it got stolen or destroyed? By the time tenants think about purchasing renters insurance, it is often too late. Having renters insurance will give you the peace of mind knowing that your belongings will be protected in the case of a tragedy, such as, vandalism, fire, smoke, or a natural disaster.

Being in the apartment business, it happens all too often that a tragedy occurs that leaves our tenants at a loss and with no means of recovery. Before this happens, we encourage renters to cover themselves and their belongings with renters insurance. For the cost of a movie ticket per month, you can sleep well knowing your valuables are insured.

Why do I need renters insurance if my landlords already have insurance?

Your landlords insurance covers the building you live in; however, it doesn’t cover any of your valuables or liability for something that happens in your apartment, like injury to another person. The following is a list of possible circumstances that renters insurance would cover:

  • You lose all your possessions due to fire or theft
  • You need to cover the cost of additional living expenses while your home is repaired from damage due to a covered loss (such as a fire or flood)
  • Your belongings have smoke damage from a fire in a nearby apartment
  • You are held liable for damages caused by someone getting injured in your home
  • You have valuables stolen from your car
  • Your dog bites a guest in your home and your guest needs medical attention

But, doesn’t renters insurance cost a lot?

Actually, renters insurance is surprisingly affordable. For as little as the cost of a movie ticket per month, all of your possessions could be covered. If you already have an auto insurance policy, insurance companies will often give you a multiple policy discount when renters insurance is added to your current policy. We’ve heard of overall insurance costs going down with the addition of renters insurance – this means there is actually a reduction in your monthly insurance expenses just by adding renters insurance. Also, if you add up how much it would cost to replace your clothes, electronics, and furniture, renters insurance becomes more than worth it!

Okay, you’ve convinced me… where do I sign up?

A great starting place is to go to your current auto policy provider and check out what kind of renters insurance deals they offer. This way you can take advantage of any multiple policy discounts offered by your current provider for signing up for renters insurance. We recommend shopping around between the different insurance companies to find the insurance policy that best suits your needs.
